THE JOURNEY TO STRONGER LEADERSHIP.

THE JOURNEY TO STRONGER LEADERSHIP.

‘‘Stronger Leadership Isn’t About Knowing More; It’s About Becoming More. And It Starts from Within.’’

– Simon Sinek.

Self-awareness remains one of the most underestimated leadership skills, yet it is also among the most impactful. According to organisational psychologist Tasha Eurich’s research, while 95% of people believe they are self-aware, only 10–15% are. This gap creates a dangerous blind spot for leaders, affecting how they lead, how they are perceived, and how they develop.

Self-awareness is, at its core, the ability to see ourselves clearly, to understand who we are, how others see us, and how we fit into the world around us.’’ Tasha Eurich, in her book, Insight. As a leadership coach, I frequently remind executives, you cannot lead others with clarity if you’re not leading yourself with honesty. Self-awareness provides that internal clarity, the ability to recognise your triggers, tendencies, and how your presence affects others. So, as leaders on your journey to stronger leadership, I want you to know that:

  • STRENGTH DOESN’T COME FROM POWER; IT COMES FROM INNER GROWTH

Many leaders mistake strength for external force, control, decisiveness, or toughness. However, lasting leadership influence isn’t built on pressure. It is rooted in presence, which requires inner work. This involves understanding what motivates you, your values, your patterns, your default reactions under stress, and learning to align them with the person you aim to be as a leader.

Brené Brown said in Daring Greatly, ‘‘What we know matters, but who we are matters more.’’  Stronger leadership isn’t just about boosting your performance. It’s about becoming more grounded, more aware, and more contemplative. This kind of leadership doesn’t break under pressure, it adapts gracefully because it’s rooted in something deeper than strategy and self-awareness.

  • FEEDBACK IS A MIRROR, NOT A THREAT

One of the most powerful tools for building leadership strength is also one of the most avoided, which is feedback. Too many senior leaders stop growing because they’ve stopped listening, or they’ve filtered feedback to only reinforce what they already believe.

But feedback is a mirror. It reveals not just how others experience you, but where your growth edge lives. As Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen put it, ‘‘Receiving feedback sits at the intersection of two human needs: the need to learn and the need to be accepted.’’

Strong leaders don’t defend themselves against it; they lean into it, because they know feedback is often the gateway to the next level of leadership strength.

Feedback is a mirror, not a threat. Use it to grow stronger, wiser, and more effective. Ready to see your true leadership reflection? Click Here.  to take the Maxwell DISC Assessment and refine your edge.

  • REFLECTION IS A PRACTICE, NOT A LUXURY

One of the most overlooked sources of leadership growth is regular self-reflection. It’s not flashy. It doesn’t show up on your KPIs. But it is the quiet discipline that builds powerful leaders, because as John Maxwell writes in the 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, ‘‘Reflection turns experience into insight.’’

So, ask yourself:

  • When did I feel most ‘‘on’’ as a leader? What conditions made that possible?
  • What internal habits or mindset shifts made me more effective?
  • What did I let go of or embrace that made me stronger?

As Maxwell reminds us, ‘‘Experience is not the best teacher; evaluated experience is.’’ Reflection doesn’t just remind you of what works; its re-centres you in who you’re becoming.

  • VULNERABILITY AND RESILIENCE ARE THE INNER MUSCLES OF STRENGTH

Today’s most effective leaders are not the most polished; they’re the most real. They embrace vulnerability, not as weakness, but as strategic strength. They know that leading with openness, emotional intelligence, and even imperfection makes them more human and more powerful.

What enables them to do that? Resilience.
Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back from setbacks. It’s about possessing the inner maturity to reflect, reframe, and come back stronger and more self-aware than before. The more you develop internally, the more adaptable you become externally. That is what makes a leader sustainable, not merely successful.

True strength isn’t hardness; it’s the courage to bend without breaking. How flexible is your leadership? Click Here.  to test and strengthen your resilience with the Maxwell DISC Assessment tools.

3 PERSONAL SHIFTS TO BUILD STRONGER LEADERSHIP

  1. SHIFT FROM REACTING TO REFLECTING: Slow down long enough to observe your emotional triggers and default responses. Strength comes when you respond with intention, not impulse.
  2. SHIFT FROM KNOWING TO BECOMING: You don’t need to know more; you need to become more. Focus your growth on presence, not just performance.
  3. SHIFT FROM CONTROL TO CLARITY: Leadership isn’t about managing everything, it’s about seeing clearly, adapting wisely, and leading with conviction from the inside out.
